Medical Technologist Program Description

The Hurley Medical Center School of Medical Technology is a hospital-based, ten month medical technologist program. Only students who possess Bachelor of Science degrees in medical technology or a related field may apply to the Hurley School of Medical Technology. Selection of qualified applicants for the medical technologist program is through the Medical Technology Internship Matching Program of Michigan (MTIMPM).

The Hurley School of Medical Technology is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

The medical technologist program starts the first or second week of September with a one day hospital orientation. During this orientation, the medical technology students learn:

• Professional ethics and responsibilities
• Hospital and laboratory safety
• Quality assurance/quality improvement principles
• Hospital and laboratory accreditation standards
• HIPAA privacy and security
• Corporate compliance
• Cultural diversity

They participate in exercises in communication and team building. They are also introduced to the various clinical information systems used at Hurley Medical Center and receive basic instruction on LIS applications.

The remainder of the clinical year is spent in the following laboratory disciplines:

• Microbiology (10 weeks)
• Hematology/Urinalysis/Coagulation (11 weeks)
• Blood Bank (6 weeks)
• Automated Chemistry (5 weeks)
• Special Chemistry (2 weeks)
• Serology (2 weeks)
• Phlebotomy (1 week)
• Molecular Diagnostics (1 week)
• Research/Review (1 week)

Each student proceeds to a specified clinical department on a unique schedule assuring individualized instruction and minimal overlap. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art instrumentation, so the student has extensive “hands-on” experience in modern laboratory techniques. All students participate in classroom instruction Monday through Friday, covering subject areas of:

• Hematology
• Coagulation
• Parasitology
• Chemistry
• Immunology
• Bacteriology
• Virology
• Mycology
• Blood Products
• Immunohematology
• Information Systems
• Management and Education
• Six Sigma White Belt Training

Throughout the year, the students are invited to selected conferences and in-service meetings.

At the end of the clinical period, the Hurley Medical Center School of Medical Technology grants a certificate to students successfully completing the medical technologist program. Graduates are eligible to take medical technologist certification examinations such as the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel. Passing these exams certifies the graduate as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP) and/or as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist CLS (NCA).

Graduation rates between 2010 and 2012 were 100%. The Board of Registry Certification rate between 2010 and 2012 was 100%.

There is no tuition for the Hurley Medical Center School of Medical Technology.
