If you’re a pediatric resident in a community rotation, what’s one of the best parts of your job? For two first-year residents, it is volunteering at a fun community event that promotes safety for kids.

Pediatric first-year resident physicians Maryann Betty MD and Dunya Mohammad MD enjoyed helping during Run through the Color and Flames 5K Aug. 29 in Fenton. In addition to being on hand during the race, Hurley’s Injury Prevention Team and Safe Kids of Greater Flint set up educational displays and activities to teach kids about wearing helmets and seat belts and other prevention topics, especially as it pertains to bikes. Betty and Mohammad helped spread the word about safety and helped kids sign up for giveaways.

Fenton is about a 20-minute drive from Flint and lies mostly in Genesee County, with small portions in neighboring Oakland and Livingston counties. Proceeds from the event went to Fenton Firefighter Charities and the Fenton Education Foundation.
