I’m from Flint, born and raised! It’s my home.

I completed my M.D. at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, East Lansing.

Why did you stay in Michigan?

I stayed in Flint because of my family friends and strong sense of community that exists in Flint. Flint is made up of strong and proud people who fight for the city and are filling it with awesome new and exciting things.

Why did you choose your specialty?

I have always wanted to help women deliver babies. I also have a lot of passion for women’s health and needs. Surgery is an added bonus for me; to be able to actively cure or alleviate ailment is an amazing part of my specialty.

My husband Bill and I have been together for almost 17 years. We live in a historic home in downtown Flint. We have fur children (2 dogs and a cat) at this point.

When you’re not working, what do you do for fun?

Read, write, play with my dogs, go antiquing and visit historic homes.

What do you love about Hurley and the mid-Michigan area?

I think I love most about this area and the hospital is that you can really make a difference. You can impact people’s lives in a major way by doing the smallest things and actually know that you’ve done it. From doing research projects to clinical care, everything you do makes a huge impact on a patient’s life or changes the community.

What inspires you?

The people in the world who do so much with so little are the people who inspire me to do more every day. They make me remember that I can be a bigger person and do great things no matter what I have at my disposal.

What was your toughest challenge in achieving your goals - and how did you overcome it?

I think one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever faced was understanding who I was in this world and what contribution I was going to make. I spent so much time worrying about what other people wanted me to do and what other people thought I should do and not really investing time on what I would love to do. Once I found my passion in life and understood that who I was was the best person that I could be, things became easier. And after that, life started making sense and my goals became very attainable.

What do you miss most about home – and how do you keep in touch with family and friends?

Fortunately for me, Flint is my home: my family and friends are here, and my community is here. But I make sure that I stay in touch with all of them by being part of my community and remaining active. Family life is very important to me, and I always make time for them whenever I can.

Favorite area coffee shop:

One of my favorite places to get coffee is the Flint Crêpe Company in downtown Flint. It also helps that they have crêpes there.

What’s your favorite quotation?

One of my favorite quotations is, “Life isn’t about living through the storm - it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”

This reminds me that life is always going to have problems. Things are always going to be bad at some point, but, no matter what, you can always make the best of a bad situation, and you can always learn to enjoy even the worst of times in life in some way by learning a lesson.

What surprised you the most about working at Hurley?

The thing that always surprises me the most is the courage and bravery of the people who live in the Flint area. They endure so much, and they always have positive stories to tell and great ways to make you understand that life is always going to turn out OK no matter what.
