Dr. Nolan wears many hats: A board-certified intensivist, also trained as a neonatologist; a child abuse and protection expert; an asthma and bronchopulmonary dysplasia clinic physician; the Genesee Intermediate School District medical director; and board member of many other community organizations. It is hard to believe that he is only one person! (We suspect he has clones all over the place.)

With roots in Ireland, Dr. Nolan completed his residency at Hurley Medical Center and his fellowships at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Dr. Nolan’s academic interests include reducing asthma disparities, preventing injuries, and educating others on the best possible care for children. Donned in scrubs, Dr. Nolan is always accessible and usually present at resident conferences. He is an excellent teacher and wins rave reviews from the residents and medical students who work with him. He is known as much for his quick quips as he is for his renowned clinical knowledge and calm bedside manner.

He has also received Hurley’s highest physician honor: the Pinnacle Award, which recognizes and honors a physician member of the Hurley family who epitomizes the height of professionalism, shows unwavering commitment to the community, demonstrates dedication to the medical center, and consistently and unfailingly embodies Hurley’s mission: Clinical Excellence. Service to People.

It’s hard to believe that Dr. Nolan has free time, but when he is free, he enjoys bicycling, as well kayaking on Lake Michigan. To Dr. Nolan, Flint and Hurley are just as much a home to him as his actual residence with his wife and 3 children. “My home is PICU and Pediatrics, and the nurses are the backbone,” he says.

Dr. Nolan appreciates Hurley and Flint because “the people and community agencies work well together, in contrast to some larger metropolitan areas, where there are more political barriers,” he says, adding that he enjoys the diverse population that Hurley serves.
