Carmen Paredes Saenz
Obstetrics & Gynecology, Graduating Class of 2019 & Chief Resident
I completed medical school training at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru.
What brought you here to the U.S.?
I came to the U.S. when I was a medical student for an elective rotation in OB/GYN at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. I was inspired by a different aspect of medicine, one where available evidence is used to make medical decisions. After this experience, I decided to pursue my postgraduate training in the U.S. After my graduation from medical school, I decided to hone my research skills. I worked as a Research Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital/ Harvard Medical School, Boston, and completed a graduate program in clinical research.
Why did you choose your specialty?
During my clinical years of medical school, I followed many patients through the end of their pregnancies and assisted in a great number of normal deliveries. When an attending physician gave me the opportunity to perform a C-section in a woman with a breech presentation baby, I confirmed my decision to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology. It was an indescribable experience with mixed feelings of excitement, nervousness and happiness, and the miracle of life. This experience underscored for me that I wanted to contribute, as a physician, to the health of mothers and infants.
