Youssef Youssef

Program:
Obstetrics & Gynecology Graduating Class of 2023
Where are you from originally?
Cairo, Egypt
Medical training:
- Medical school: Cairo University School of Medicine, Cairo, Egypt
- Obstetrics & Gynecology residency: El Galaa Teaching Hospital, Cairo, Egypt (one of the biggest public maternity hospitals in Cairo)
When did you come to Michigan?
I moved to the U.S searching for the best opportunity that would make me a confident and a competent physician who would be able to provide the utmost outcomes for his patients.
Why did you choose your specialty?
I grew up shadowing my father, who was an OBGYN. I never imagined my self doing anything else. Its amazing sharing these unforgettable moments with your patients.
When you're not working, what do you do for fun?
Sports is where I destress and stop thinking about anything going on in my life. In my free time, I would prefer hanging out with friends than watching a movie alone.
What do you love most about Hurley?
Hurley makes you feel so proud of yourself and how are you able to help people who are in need. The community people we serve have a lot of socioeconomic burdens in their lives, so taking care of their health is not a priority for many of them. After a long day at work, you go back home and feel that you did something useful. Other thing about Hurley is that you get to meet people from all parts of the world with different backgrounds, cultures and experiences, which makes you always learn something knew.
Inspiration?
Humbleness of knowledgeable, experienced physicians and how they always show that there is something they can learn.
Toughest challenge?
Toughest challenge is when you fail. Failing in exams, matching or anything else makes you question your whole plan, and it can make you quit your dream. Stressing yourself by looking back, analyzing what happened will never help. I found that turning the page and starting all over with even more effort is your only way to succeed. You will be surprised at the end how it worked out in a way you didn’t plan for.
What do miss most about home?
Homesickness hits you hard, especially on the days off. Daily FaceTime routines on my way to work make me feel that I am with my family and friends in their daily lives, which makes it better.
Favorites?
I am not so picky about food, but a perfect medium-cooked steak would put a big smile on my face :). I have been to many countries and, in my opinion, beaches in Egypt are one of the best. Swimming in an outdoor pool for 30 minutes is my favourite workout.
Favorite quote?
“Great difficulties may be surmounted by perseverance and patience.” Abigail Adams
Every person has his own stories and difficulties. Hardship is something we will all experience. Perseverance is my key to success, and patience is the thing I need to improve.
