Internal Medicine Program Director for 14 years
Dr. Ghassan Bachuwa was a passionate educator and researcher and a well-respected clinician in the community, and Hurley will miss his leadership, loyalty, commitment and experience.
He died July 19, 2023, at age 73. Born in Iraq in 1950, he brought his young family (wife, Firyal; daughters, Rima and Zina; and son, Alexander) to the United States, where he eventually served Hurley Medical Center for nearly 40 years.
At Hurley Medical Center, Dr. Bachuwa served as Internal Medicine Residency Program Director for 14 years and as Transitional Year Program Director for 26 years.
In addition to his medical school and residency and fellowship training, Dr. Bachuwa held two master's degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in Health Services Administration and in Science, Trial & Research Design. He also was board-certified in: Internal Medicine; Geriatric Medicine; Quality Assurance and Utilization Review, Medical Management; and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
He received multiple honors and awards throughout his career, particularly in research.
To fill the administrative voids left by Dr Bachuwa's passing, the Hurley Graduate Medical Education Committee appointed Dr. Philip McDonald as Interim Internal Medicine Residency Program Director and Dr. Adiraj Singh as Associate Program Director. The GMEC also appointed Dr Adiraj Singh as Interim Transitional Year Program Director.
