What brought you to Michigan?
My family moved to the U.S. in 2018 but the first time I visited Michigan was in the winter of 2020. I originally came to the US to practice evidence based, patient centered, and reliable care. I came to Michigan because of the natural beauty and diverse patient population.
Why did you choose your specialty?
Growing up in vibrant India, understanding and addressing the profound influence of social determinants of health was the driving force behind my choice to specialize in Internal Medicine. Internal Medicine allows one to have a solid grounding in the various processes and systems within a health care system. As an IM resident in an underserved community, we have the opportunity to coordinate care with various specialists, and work as part of multidisciplinary team aimed at improving health outcomes and reducing healthcare disparities.
Family
My Family lives in the US, and I have 2 beautiful cats, Taegum and Baggugosha, that thoroughly enjoy sitting on my laptop.
When you're not working, what do you do for fun?
In my free time, I enjoy trying out new recipes, listening to audiobooks and researching new restaurants. Going to the gym and hiking helps me maintain work-life balance. On my weekends off, I either take part in pick up soccer or some other sport.
What do you like most about Mid-Michigan so far?
Mid-Michigan has a wealth of natural beauty, and I try my best to make the most of it. When I am at HMC wether its on floors post-call or waiting for coffee by Jazzman's, the healthcare community within Hurley is extremely positive and fosters a safe working environment. The people I work with are definitely a great asset and one of the best parts about this residency program (from fellow residents, nurses, cafetaria workers to the various attendings and specialists).
Toughest challenges
Working hard in itself is not enough. As an IM resident we work in multiple teams, services and serve diverse populations with varying needs. What works during one rotation/ experience/ encounter may not transfer to the next. During these situations, feedback from team members, attendings, patients and evidence has proved essential in allowing me to recaliberste my aporoach and adapt to the surroundings that I am in. As a result, we gain more exposure and are able to make meaningful contributions.
What do you miss most about home?
I miss the Himalayas and spending my vacation hiking in the mountains. I also miss home food and my grandma, but I make up for that by calling them and by learning various punjabi recipes. Whenever I miss home, I turn to my kitchen. Cooking becomes my magical time machine, whisking me back to those cherished moments and flavours of home.
Favorites
I enjoy mystery novels and enjoy listening to audiobooks by Agatha Christie, as well as the Sherlock Holmes collection.
Favorite quote
In times of change learners inherit the earth; while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.
~Eric Hoffer
"Learners" anticipate rather than react to change. They become essential facilitators within their altered environment. Similarly, in medicine we need to continuously strive to improve processes, reassess existing systems, be prepared to alter our approach, and rise up to various known/unknown challenges in the future.
What surprised you most about working at Hurley?
The allure of providing cross-departmental, value-based care to an underserved population struggling with complex chronic conditions has been both an exhilarating challenge and a deeply gratifying pursuit. Building connections with people, delving into their life stories, and forging meaningful bonds is why I have thoroughly enjoyed practicing internal medicine at Hurley.
