When did you move to the U.S.?

Our family moved to the United States of America through the DV (Diversity Visa) lottery back in 2006. I had a supportive family to let me pursue my medical degree in Nepal. I finally came back to the U.S. after completing medical school. I moved to Michigan in order to pursue my residency training at Hurley Medical Center, which has been ranked the #1 smart hospital in Michigan state.

Why did you choose your specialty?

I love to provide comprehensive care and have a long-term rapport with patients. I love interacting with people and want to take care of adult patients with various pathologies from admission to discharge. I also love diagnostic workups. Internal Medicine is the specialty that allows me to take care of sick patients and be on their care team.

Family?

I am a family-oriented person. I love having my family members around. I live with my father (Govinda Bahadur Karki), mother (Rukmini Karki), wife (Samjhana Belbase) and our daughter (Kiana Karki, born in 2022).

When you're not working, what do you do for fun?

I love visiting new places, cooking Nepali/Indian dishes, watching suspense/thriller movies, and hanging out with friends and family.

What do you like about Hurley?

Hurley has a great EMR system. Human resources and program leaderships are approachable when needed. The patient population and residents are well diversified.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the challenges and deadlines. It keeps me motivated to learn more.
