Whether Dr. Bachuwa is at the gym during a workout or at a patient’s bedside during clinical duties, he has an easy way with people. He clearly addresses his patient’s needs – and his residents’ questions. He is known for his sharp thinking, his ability to help residents to reach their goals, and his determination to model the fitness activities that he recommends to patients – and to residents (as a great way to manage stress).

Dr. Bachuwa’s professional interests include all aspects of medicine, with special emphasis in geriatric medicine, preventive and periodic health screens, administrative matters and quality assurance, and teaching and training faculty and residents in evidence-based medicine and epidemiology. He has served as a principle investigator in many academic and clinical research studies and also mentors residents in research and quality-improvement projects. In addition to his medical and educational activities, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, and pursues interests in sports (he has run several marathon races), travel, reading and music.

In 2022, Dr. Bachuwa received an award of appreciation from the American College of Physicians for his commitment to mentoring and the positive impact of his mentorship in the internal medicine community. Plus, he has earned Hurley’s Investigator-of-the-Year Award several times during the region’s annual MSU-FAME Community Research Forum, was named Hurley Medical Center’s 1992-1993 Attending Physician of the Year and received the Hurley Pinnacle Award in 1997. The Pinnacle Award recognizes and honors physicians who epitomize the height of professionalism, show unwavering commitment to the community, demonstrate dedication to the medical center, and consistently and unfailingly embody Hurley’s mission: “Clinical Excellence.
