James Buterakos
Decades of leadership
Jim Buterakos has been serving Graduate Medical Education at Hurley Medical Center since 1982. He has overseen 11 training programs, graduating more than 1,0000 residents and fellows.
Buterakos currently holds the titles of Designated Institutional Official and Chief Academic Officer. In the past, his duties have included executive director of The Hurley Clinic, executive director of Hurley Health Services, administrator for Ambulatory Services, and director of Medical Education.
Buterakos is known for his logical approach to problem-solving and his ability to make tough decisions and to juggle many tasks well. He fosters teamwork among the many departments that report to him - and that should not be surprising for anyone who knows his sports background.
He graduated from Michigan State University, East Lansing, where played baseball, as well as from Flint Southwestern High School, where he played baseball and football. He was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 as a member of the 1976 Flint Southwestern Football Team, which went undefeated in its regular Saginaw Valley Conference season with Buterakos as quarterback.
