When Dr. Rachel Hollander was was selected as the third-ever Alice Hamilton Scholar (2025-2027), Hurley folks were happy to welcome her back. They remembered her fondly from her medical student years on the Flint Campus of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine - and her subsequent education and experiences make her a perfect fit for the new Hurley position. Not only is she bringing her public health interests and skills to the Flint community, but she also is serving as a faculty member in Hurley's Pediatric Residency Program. Dr Hollander will be precepting in the Hurley Children's Clinic at the Flint Farmers' Market, downtown Flint, as well as teaching medical students and working toward her master of public health degree.

The two-year Alice Hamilton program is part of the MSU-Hurley Children's Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative. Alice Hamilton - an American physician, researcher and author who made great strides in social justice - is considered the mother of the field of occupational health. Alice Hamilton scholars complete public-health training, mentored research, and clinical care within the PPHI. They earn a master's degree in public health.

For Dr. Hollander, it's an ideal next step.

“Public health is health,” she said. “There is no way to separate health outcomes from the intricate web of social structures, racial inequities, poverty, environmental injustice, amongst countless other variables that affect health.”
