At Hurley Medical Center, Vijay Naraparaju MD is a familiar and friendly face. Not only did he graduate from Hurley’s Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program (where he was chief resident), but he also served as a faculty member and associate program director before taking on the role of interim program director and then program director. He served in the latter role until Dec. 31, 2019. The former Hurley Children’s Clinic director also is a fellow in the American College of Physicians. Residents give him high marks for his calm, structured approach - and his scholarly approach to learning, not to mention his warm personality.

Scholarly and Performance Improvement/Quality Activity

Dr. Naraparaju’s past projects include a state-funded grant to implement asthma guidelines steps and tools, improving hypertension care, improving standing orders to increase flu-vaccination rates, and projects to improve child growth-charting. In addition, he has designed or worked on many medical education curricula on subjects such as musculoskeletal system, ECG, chronic care, nursery and more. His regional and national presentations with colleagues included resident interviews to ascertain social determinants of health as part of social history and a workshop on cultural competency.
