Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Assess how the ethical principles or respect for patient autonomy and beneficence apply to decision-making capacity and surrogate decision-making in the informed consent process.
  • Apply the core criteria for medical decision-making capacity and avoid common pitfalls.
  • Identify an appropriate surrogate decision-maker for patients who lack decisional capacity.
