Transitional Year Graduating Class of 2024

Where are you from originally?

Los Angeles, Calif.

Medical School:

University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Mich.

What brought you to Michigan?

I am originally from Southern California. I chose University of Michigan for medical school, so I could branch outside of California and explore a new environment. I will be completing my dermatology residency at University of Michigan because I love the staff and training!

Why did you choose your specialty?

I've always been interested in mental health; however, a career in psychiatry seemed too emotionally draining (shoutout to all mental health professionals doing the real work out here). I realized with dermatology I could achieve a suitable work-life balance in addition to practicing medicine that makes people feel better about themselves and empowered in their skin.

Family:

My parents live in Southern California, and my two sisters live in the Bay Area. My partner is a PGY-1 OBGYN resident at University of Michigan.

When you're not working, what do you do for fun?

Go to concerts and comedy shows, play music at home, watch films, go on runs.

What do you love about Flint area?

Flint has such a strong community focus, and I feel honored to serve a population that has been neglected for so long.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by unique, passionate, and kind people; innovative art; people who are actively trying to expand their worldview, rather than become more insular.

What was your toughest challenge in achieving your goals?

I took 8 years off before medical school. I worked for many years but also spent a lot of time figuring myself out and determining career motivations.

What do you miss most about home?

The sun. I call my younger sister most days of the week.

Favorites?

I'll shout out Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk and scholar who has had a profound impact on my life.

Favorite quotation?

There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.

~Leonard Cohen

Biggest surprise about Hurley?

The people - patients, coresidents, attendings - are all so genuine and kind. It's a wonderful group of people.
