Curriculum

At Hurley Medical Center, the two fellows benefit from the experience of 6 trauma faculty members, as well as from working in a teaching hospital that also is the region’s only Level I Trauma Center. The curriculum and expectations for each fellowship position are described below.

The clinical program prepares the fellow in many aspects of trauma surgery, with a special emphasis on trauma evaluation, surgical care and critical care support. The educational experience includes: The research program prepares the fellow for an academic and clinical career in trauma, with a special emphasis on research and performance improvement, well as on teaching. This advanced year includes:
Advanced laparoscopy Advanced quality and ethical research principles and skills
Video-assisted thoracoscopy Advanced quality or performance improvement methods
Spine exposures Health prevention concepts
Vascular access Advanced scientific presentations
Emergency general surgery Educational methods
Grand Rounds Interdisciplinary project leadership

In addition, the fellow is expected to complete at least one trauma research paper annually as well as present at local and state research forums. The Fellow also may take part in comprehensive quality assurance and improvement programs, as well as community education and injury prevention programs. Upon completion, the candidate is awarded a certificate. In addition, the fellow is expected to lead at least one original research study, conduct at least one performance improvement project, participate in at least one community health activity, produce at least one educational development activity, submit at least one manuscript for publication, and submit at least one abstract for oral or poster presentation. Upon completion, the candidate is awarded a certificate.
